Electrical Control Panel in Mining

Submitted by Kristian on Mon, 12/11/2023 - 13:00

Ever wondered about the different electrical control systems used in power distribution engineering? This article will explain the various electrical control panels that are used to control motors in processing plants. These control panels start or stop equipment operation using switchgear, SCADA automation, and components such as MCCBs, contactors, PLCs, overload relays, and plug-in receptacles.

Electrical Control Panels Are Available In Three Main Types:

1. Power Control Center Panel (PCC Panel).

2. Motor Control Center Panel (MCC Panel).

3. Automation Panel.

What is an Electrical Control Panel (ECP)?

Imagine an electrical control panel like a human being. Just as our body has vital organs that monitor and control the environment, so does an electrical control panel.

Power Control Center Panel (PCC Panel).

The power control panel (PCC) contains all electrical switchgear such as air-circuit breakers, MCCs, and MCBs. It also houses busbars of an appropriate size made from aluminum or copper. The main circuit breakers receive power from the control panel for all switches, which ranges between 440V and 800V AC. The board has an isolator that allows you to turn off the power. However, the incoming side will still be active.

Motor Control Center Panel (MCC Panel).

Multiple electric motors are used in many commercial and industrial applications. Motor control center panels (MCC Panels) are designed to perform this function. Overload relays and solid-state motor controllers protect motor operations. An MCC Panel manufacturer can control the board locally or remotely, using different starters such as direct online (DOL) or star-delta.

MCC Panels (motor control centers) are essential for the control of motors in many electrical industries. It controls the motor as an electrical control panel on LT panels.

Automation Panel (SCADA PLC Panel)

The automation panel (SCADA PLC Panel), also known as PLC Automation Panel, is a digital computer that can be programmed. This is a control panel used for many electronic and electrical circuits. It has solid PLC logic and flawless PLC programming.

Intelligent MCC Panel

A smart IMCC Panel that controls multiple motors centrally is an intelligent MCC Panel. The panel consists of several feeders connected to a standard power busbar. Each section contains a mixture of starters. Intelligent MCC panels use advanced features and enhanced workability through a communication-capable motor management device (SIMOCODE) that monitors the motor's other lead processes by the process control system.

Intelligent MCC Panels are a modular and flexible management system for low voltage motors, which can be quickly and directly linked to superior automation systems. The panels cover all requirements, including the safety-related disconnecting of the motor feeder/automation system.

Electrical Control Panel Design

Electrical control panels can be used to control mechanical equipment. When purchasing electrical control panels, opt for LT panels that have undergone pre-treatment for degreasing, water rinsing, and de-rusting/phosphating. These LT panels must be painted with synthetic enamel or powder coating. The product is then put through a seven-tank procedure, which improves its reliability. The panel is supported by SMC/DMC bases and earthing busbars. This highlights the importance of MCC panels in electrical control panels and LT panels.

Electrical Distribution Boards Types

Electrical panels and solar LT panels are the two main types of electrical distribution panels.

Electrical Panels: Also called the load center, the panel is a metal box that receives the main electricity supply for a building and then distributes it to different circuits.

Solar LT Panels: These panels are used to distribute power generated by solar panels, both internally in the industry and externally.

Electrical consultants are often hired by many industries to design electrical distribution boards. These boards include a transformer for distribution and then a bus ducting system that leads to the PCC Panel, which is used for the distribution of electrical panels. Electrical contractors provide MCC Panels, APFC Panels, and other panels to improve functionality. Solar power plants also require Solar ACDB and Solar DCDB Feeder Pillars, Junction Boxes, and Synchronizing Panels.

How to obtain a Certificate of Type Test from CPRI

CPRI is a research institute established by the Government of India. CPRI approved manufacturers are professionals who have been authorized by CPRI to ensure the safety and quality of electrical control systems production.
