Low voltage and low current are required for sensors and controllers that automate machinery. According to the National Electrical Code, designers must include overcurrent protection devices. There is an alternative to using circuit breakers and fuses. Modern electronic circuit breakers (ECBs), can increase safety and reliability.

Considerations on Control Power

Automation equipment in North America is typically supplied with 120VAC. Power Supplies can be used to convert 120VAC into 24VDC for control components. For 120VAC there is a need for branch and feeder circuit protection, whereas only supplementary protection for 24VDC is required.

Fuses come in a variety of sizes and amperage ratings. It can be hard to determine which fuse has blown unless an indicator is included on the holder. After identifying blown fuses, the technician must examine the original part and, in some cases, the design documents, before finding an equivalent replacement.

Circuit Breakers is the second tried and true OCPD technique. They are also available in a variety of current ratings and trip curvatures. Circuit breakers that have a UL1077 rating can be used for lower-level control circuits. Circuit breakers are usually resetable after a trip unless the overcurrent condition that caused the trip was severe enough to damage it, which is an uncommon occurrence.

Modern Electronic Circuit Breakers

ECBs monitor the load current electronically and provide fast-acting supplementary protection by switching circuits off precisely, quickly and repeatedly in response to events such as overcurrent or short circuit. The ECBs can be turned on and off by remote control or like circuit breakers. Status LED lights show the channel status. ECBs are able to provide feedback pulse sequences to a programmable controller.

There are models with up to eight channels and a compact design that takes less space on the panel than other OCPDs. ECBs allow users to install a large 24VDC bulk supply and distribute power safely from it to multiple loads.
